New York City Meals-on-Wheels Senior Program

Over 25 Senior Centers in New York City are in jeopardy of being shut down due to Governor Cuomo’s proposed Budget Cuts.

The New York City Department for the Aging released its list of senior centers that would close if the state cuts $25 million from Title XX.  If the proposed budget cuts are passed, 105 senior centers in the city will be closed down — 25 Centers in Brooklyn alone — leaving eight to 10 thousand seniors guessing where their next meal would come from and leaving them with nowhere to go.

The Senior Centers are more that just a place to receive a meal. For most, it’s a place to be with people.

“More than half of our seniors live under the poverty line,” said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. “For many seniors, these centers provide a reason for living.”

The Red Hook senior center is already an isolated community, said Jose Ortiz Ortiz. If their senior center closes, those seniors will have nowhere else to go.
