Day 265/365 – San Gennaro Feast
The 86th Annual Feast of San Gennaro , Inc. will take place in Little Italy for 11 days, from Thursday, September 13 through Sunday, September 23, 2012, on the streets of historic Little Italy.
Presented annually since 1996 by Figli di San Gennaro, Inc. (Children of San Gennaro).
Although this is an annual celebration of faith, the Feast of San Gennaro is known the world over for its festive atmosphere, an 11-day event featuring religious processions and colorful parades, free musical entertainment every day, a wide variety of ethnic food delicacies, charming restaurants and cafes and even a world-famous cannoli-eating competition! The central focus of the celebration takes place every September 19th, the official Saint Day when a celebratory Mass is held in Most Precious Blood Church, followed immediately by a religious procession in which the Statue of San Gennaro is carried from its permanent home in the church through the streets that comprise Little Italy.
Info collected from here.
We drove there but getting there is very accessible by various trains to Canal Street. Our first sight was a stage performance by a group of men on the corner of Mott and Grand Street. As we walked further into the streets, we were engulfed with the aroma of sausage and steak being grilled, peppers and onions, sweet zeppolis being fried.. Foodie Heaven..
We had Sausage with Broccoli Rabe Sandwich, stopped for beer, then had a Sausage with peppers and onions. NO alcohol is allowed on the streets for sale. We walked some more, text photos to our Italian cousins, making them drool and wish to be with us.. “Family reunion at the feast next year”.. haha..
Then the highlight of our night, the reason why we attend these events – Z E P P O L I S!!! yay!! I didn’t take any photos of it but someone should have take a photo of me. After I had mine (all 5 of them), I looked like a coke addict, covered in white powder.. hehehe!!
Fun, Safe night.. and if you ever saw Mean Streets with Robert Di Naro and Harvey Keitel, you’d understand if I said we had “Chinks” afterwards… Got home around midnight…
Add it to your list of things to do next year, or this weekend if you have time
